struggling

hmmmmm. difficult today. i'm trying to make some headway on my first-year phd report. i haven't written something like this since sometime in 2002, and i've been hindered further by the structural guideline i have to follow which just seem to be causing me confusion about which information should go in which section, and indeed how much information should be in the report as a whole. should it be comprehensive, should it assume knowledge, should it detail the field of research as a whole or just my work?

probably should have thought about all of that before trying to write it.
